Due in part to the orthopedic nature of the surgery, recovering from clavicle surgery is a lengthy process. There is, however, relatively little pain and full range of motion returns almost immediately after surgery. It takes about one to three weeks before the soreness resolves and about three months total for the bone to attain full strength, Dr. Rogers says.

A reverse total shoulder replacement is a special type of shoulder surgery. During the surgery, your surgeon removes the damaged parts of the shoulder and replaces them with artificial parts.
The shoulder joint is made up of the upper arm bone and the shoulder blade . The rounded end of the upper arm bone moves inside a shallow socket in the shoulder blade. In a reverse total shoulder replacement, a surgeon removes the rounded head of the upper arm bone. Using screws and special tools, he or she attaches a plastic socket to the remaining bone. The surgeon also removes part of the socket of the shoulder blade. This is then replaced with a metal ball. The metal ball can then move around inside the socket that attaches to the upper arm bone.
This is different from a standard total shoulder replacement. In a standard surgery, the metal ball attaches to the upper part of the humerus. The new socket attaches to the shoulder blade. This more closely follows a persons real anatomy.

I still some days dream of what life would have been like as a surgeon if I had stayed in BME and gone MD/PHD instead of going back to math. So I like to google-fu topics and learn about surgery, albeit, surgeons are doomed to have their surgeries done probably 100% by robotic incisions in the next 20 years
So here I am thinking tho, how do we get this to happen? I know among us are dozens, if not hundreds of us, who would be like “pick me! pick me! pick me!” if asked to be the first test patients. And even tho I do pass with my shoulders, they’re definitely a source of dysphoria and I’m always dreaming of a future when surgeons can do something about this. Hopefully maybe with 3D printed bones. Which are also on the cusp of happening mainstream.
Extra: I know in Korea they’re developing femininizing hip surgery.
So… how do we get orthopedic and/or plastic surgeons to do this for us, thoughts?
Bonus Question: Does anyone know of any Orthotic group that works on helping rib changes? There has to be a better way to do this than with old school tight lacing – not that I don’t love my semi-pricey corsets, I do. But it’d be cool to have an orthotic brace designed to exactly do this for us.

How To Dress After Shoulder Surgery
In the early phase of your recovery, you should wear loose-fitting clothing you can easily put on and that fit over your sling. Wear shirts with a zipper or easy-to-use buttons, rather than having to pull them over your head. Shirts that dont require you putting your arm above shoulder level will be best.
Wear bras that close in the front to make them easier to put on during your early post-operative phase. If you dont have or cant purchase a bra like this, put the bra on backward where the clasp is in the front, and then twist it around to your back once clasped.
Wear shoes you can put on easily with one hand, preferably with no laces, since trying to tie shoelaces with a single hand could be a big challenge. Velcro or slip-on shoes are best.

What Should You Do
The treatment for shoulder dislocation varies depending on the symptoms, extent of the injury, and risk of recurrent dislocation. Often, its recommended that young athletes who play contact sports have a surgical repair after a first dislocation since the chance of repeat dislocation is high without surgery.
Most of the time, however, when theres a lower risk of recurrent dislocation, it is reasonable to try nonsurgical treatments as an initial step to manage these injuries. If a second dislocation occurs, then surgery is generally considered.
Do All Shoulder Dislocations Need Surgery
Some dislocations are unable to be reduced in the emergency department and need an urgent general anaesthetic to put the shoulder back into joint. After this assessments need to be done to determine the cause and severity of the dislocation.
Most atraumatic and muscle patterning dislocations do not require surgery and are best treated with physiotherapy.
Most first time dislocations do not require surgery and they can be managed with physiotherapy, however recurrent dislocations may require surgery to stabilise the shoulder and prevent further damage. The risk of recurrent dislocation after a first time traumatic anterior dislocation depends on age, bony damage, rotator cuff injury.
In patients under the age of 30 with a simple, first time shoulder dislocation, the risk of recurrent dislocation is 90% and this increases to almost 100% if the patient is under 20. In elderly patients recurrent dislocation can occur if there is a massive tear of the rotator cuff muscles. If there is significant bony damage to the socket there may be recurrent instability regardless of age.
